tips for Moving Houses

Tips for effective moving

By Aaron Parker, Luxury Move Management

It’s no secret that moving homes can be challenging, overwhelming and involves many moving parts. At Luxury Move Management, our goal is to turn an often stressful and anxiety provoking situation into a pleasant one.  To get you set, here are valuable tips we recommend to relieve any move-related anxiety.

1. Hire your movers in advance

Moving companies are busier than ever and, despite the number of choices, the good ones book up well in advance. Give yourself two months (when possible) and even get a virtual estimate if having them in the home is not possible. You’ll want the movers to have a clear understanding of the layout, how much stuff you have, and how best they can care for your valuable and priceless pieces. Focus on reputation and referrals over price. The best companies handle mistakes well while others may leave you chasing them if a problem arises.

2. Pare down your clothes

Go through your closets a month before moving and put all unwanted clothing in plastic bags. You can call Diabetes Canada and schedule a pickup. They will come right to your door and your clothing will go to someone in need.

3. Dispose Unwanted Furniture

If your furniture is still in good condition, sell it on Kijiji and Facebook Marketplace. Make sure to include the brand, measurements, how old it is and where it was purchased. If your furniture is old but usable, call Furniture Bank. They book pickups several weeks in advance, so don’t wait for the last minute! You’ll get a tax receipt and your furniture will go to someone in need. If your furniture is in no shape to be donated (stained, ripped, broken), it’s time to junk it.

4. Pack on a schedule

Packing takes longer than you think. If you aren’t using our team to pack for you, start early. Set aside an hour or two each day, starting 3 weeks before your move.

5. Know its worth

Send pictures of your china and collectibles to consignment stores to understand their market value. Shopping your items around to consignment stores is a great research tool. Of Things Past, Elle & Eve and Around the Block are local and should provide email estimates.

 6. Prepare an overnight bag

It’s the night before you move, the house is packed…don’t worry about finding a towel or change of clothes! Pack an overnight bag for each member of your household with toothbrush, clothes, phone charger, medication and anything else you’ll need. Even consider setting aside a clean set of bed linen so when you arrive at your new home you can make your bed. Let’s be honest…moving is exhausting!
