QUICK TIPS FOR REFRESHING YOUR HOME THIS SPRING

By Tara Lindsay, Decorium

Spring is an ideal time to declutter and redecorate. This year, you can set the tone by creating a fresh, light and airy feel to the space, using organic textures such as cotton, lightweight knit, linen, bamboo, hemp and jute. The key is to combine these textures with fresh patterns and colours, such as floral prints combined with soft lavender, radiant chartreuse, shades of green and blue, blush, rosy pink or Sherwin William’s “Colour of 2018” – Oceanside (Sw-6496). But, how can we best incorporate these trends into our homes and on budget?

The simplest approach to freshening up your living space would be to swap out your toss pillows. Just put them away or move them to your basement and replace them with something that features your favourite on-trend colour and print. Updating your pillows will give your sofa a whole new feel.

Another easy tip would be to dress your walls. Since artwork is so personal, look for something that speaks to your personality, rather than what’s on trend. Oversized artwork really creates a statement and becomes a focal point in the room. This is a quick an easy way to create a sense of ‘new’ to the space.

Naturally, lighting plays a critical role when setting the mood in a space and is both decorative and functional. To create an impact, consider a table lamp that has a pop of colour and makes a statement.

A key approach to freshening up your home in springtime is bringing the outdoors inside. Foliage such as palm leaves or fresh cut flowers instantly bring life to a space; think whimsical and vibrant.  Place them in a pretty coloured ceramic vase on your coffee table, dining table, or in your kitchen.

A new season can also mean new bedding. Your bedroom is your sanctuary and you deserve to sleep in luxury. Replace your wintery bedding with soft, natural, and breathable materials like bamboo or high thread count cottons. Shades of blue and grey, paired with soft lavender, blush, and floral or geometric prints, can set a very tranquil tone to the space.

If you are looking to update larger pricier furniture such as your sofa, dining table, and bedroom furniture, be sure to select timeless pieces and accessorize with trendier items such as an accent chair in a pop of colour and bold pattern print, or an oversized lightweight knit throw to drape over your new couch.

Ultimately, you’ll want to embrace the trends but ensure these seasonal purchases will be useful to you in the future. Be sure to select larger pieces that you love and will stand the test of time, while introducing trending colours, textures and fabrics through smaller less pricey pieces.
