The outdoor areas that surround us can often be taken for granted, but whether natural or designed, all are supported by unique, often fragile ecologies that are fine-tuned to their climate. Any abrupt or extreme changes to the status quo can be met with failure, from the death of plants to the collapse of entire ecosystems. Learning to adapt to our changing climate can provide ongoing benefits to both the environment and the homeowner.
In Toronto, our connection to landscapes is especially apparent in some of our most well-known and sought after neighborhoods. Defined by beautifully designed gardens, large mature tree canopies, and their proximity to the natural ravine system, these communities are on the frontlines when it comes to witnessing the impacts of a changing climate (flooding, erosion, mature trees in decline) and, more recently, the response of landscape architects to these changes.
As landscape architects, the context in which we design has changed. While we can’t reverse climate change, there is a growing demand and a responsibility to deliver spaces that are more responsive and respectful of their environments. One of the greatest challenges is how to create gardens that are low impact, beautiful and functional. When successful, this results in resilient landscapes that can contend with more extreme weather events, while exceeding the aesthetic demands of clients.
