At a time when we’re all spending more of our hours at home, embracing the outdoors can help us maintain active lifestyles. That could mean taking a stroll around the neighbourhood, strapping on skates at a local rink, or (if you’re looking to get away) hitting the slopes at one of the most impressive ski resorts in the region. Choosing the latter will allow you to get active outside—and recharge at the same time.
Here are five fantastic ski resorts that are a relatively short drive from Toronto…
1) Blue Mountain
Some of the best ski hills in Ontario are located near Collingwood, at the beloved Blue Mountain Resort. Slightly less than a two-hour drive from the city, this family-friendly destination is home to 147 hectares of skiing terrain, 42 trails, and impressive elevations (the highest peak reaches 720 feet).
Of course, an adrenalin rush isn’t the only thing you can experience at Blue Mountain. Niagara Escarpment views, beautiful accommodations, a luxurious spa, winter sleigh rides, and magical night-time ski sessions are just a few reasons to make the trip to this popular getaway.
2) Lakeridge
Looking for somewhere a little closer to home? Consider Lakeridge Ski Resort, which is just 45 minutes from Toronto. It’s the perfect place for ski enthusiasts who just want to get out of the city for a day. Here you’ll find 23 trails and two terrain parks, but that’s not all.
If you’ll be visiting the resort with a snowboarder, Lakeridge offers three areas devoted exclusively to their sport. There’s also a snowcross run for those seeking a different type of adventure—and a separate snow-tubing park to help keep kids entertained.
3) Hidden Valley
A little further out (about two and a half hours from Toronto) is Hidden Valley Resort. Located in historic Huntsville, this Muskoka gem is a relaxing place to spend the weekend. Explore some (or all) of the resort’s 15 trails, or check out the hills in the terrain park. Steep, gentle, straight, curved—seasoned skiers will appreciate the variety.
If you opt to turn your visit into a weekend affair, you’ll enjoy the cozy rooms, convenient amenities, and great food. There’s also an indoor saltwater pool and jacuzzi (though you’ll want to check whether these amenities are available during the pandemic).
4) Horseshoe Resort
It’s a long-time favourite among GTA ski lovers, and for good reason. Horseshoe Resort has some of the best facilities in the region, including 29 (count them) ski runs—and an assortment of hills.
Part of what makes Horseshoe Resort special is the wide variety of activities it offers. Along with its popular runs, you’ll find 30 kilometres of cross-country trails, a snow tubing park, snowshoeing, and fat biking. For a more tranquil vacation, check out the calming Amba Spa—and enjoy a decadent meal at one of four on-site restaurants.
5) Chicobee Ski Club
Kitchener is home to Chicobee Ski Club, which is about an hour away for most Toronto residents. Here you’ll find a variety of lifts, trails, and terrain to satisfy both novices and seasoned vets. If you (or one of your holiday companions) is a beginner, Chicobee is also a great place to take lessons.
The resort’s talented instructors are capable of helping skiers of all skill levels advance. If there’s any doubt about the collective expertise at Chicobee, the detailed snow- condition reports (ranging from packed powder to machine-groomed granular) should help clear things up!
